Two people died Wednesday night in a fiery crash involving two semis along Interstate 20 in Smith County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Two semi trucks collided in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 at Farm to Market Road 2015 around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, causing one of the trucks to burst into flames, according to witnesses at the scene.
The two who were killed in the crash were UPS employees. UPS released the following statement on Thursday:
Sadly, UPS can verify the fatalities of two experienced, long-service UPS drivers working as part of a team for long-haul movements. These drivers were based out of Florida. We are working with authorities on an investigation that includes many variables under review: weather, road conditions, nearby vehicles and on-scene reports.
Fire destroyed both the tractor and the single trailer attached. Any packages impacted will have exceptions noted in their tracking detail, and UPS will work with shippers for a claims process.
Red Springs Fire Department, as well as numerous other emergency agencies, responded to the scene.
The identity of the victims have not been released by authorities at this time.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
